Says Nancy Eder: This is our new little arrival, Persia. We got her when she was six weeks old and now she’s about six months old. She was a little rescue so had a tough start, but she’s really a sweetheart. She has added much joy to our lives and has made us laugh during Covid more than anything else. We got her from a rescue called ”Heading Home Animal Rescue”, although the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter has many, many kittens right now that they need to adopt and are charging $25. Think about it!

From Nancy Eder: This is Bonnie, the second new addition to our family during Covid. She is an African spurred tortoise. She weighed about 5.1 lbs. when we got her and has gained about 1.3 lbs. in one month. She could grow to 80-100 lbs. and live to be 100 if all goes well! She was found close to downtown Santa Cruz and fostered for two weeks when we adopted her. I thought we would throw occasional scraps to her and that would meet all her requirements. I was wrong! We had to build and then insulate a house for her because she likes it warm (having come from the Sahara originally!). We then built a second house around the first to keep her dry when it starts raining. We installed heaters, thermometers and a thermostat. She would forage in the wild and many plants that grow around here don’t agree with her so I check regularly to see what might be harmful to her and avoid those foods. The last picture is her enjoying a warm bath—yes, I have to keep her hydrated, too. It’s been fun learning all these tortoise facts, but it’s a good thing she has a cute personality, because she’s not quite as simple a pet as I had originally envisioned!
